Koo-wee-rup’s history is the story of pioneers who struggled to settle
the land. What makes Koo-wee-rup’s development unique is that the first
settlers were faced with a wild and impenetrable swamp covering 40,000 hectares.
The swamp was eventually conquered and 400 kilometres of drains were carved
with nothing more than picks, shovels and wheelbarrows.
Displays in the Koo Wee Rup Swamp Historical Society Museum pay tribute to
those hardy folks who dug a future for the district. Today, you can take a turn
around this land, on a Koo-wee-rup Asparagus Tour to learn more about the area
and the local industries.
A 5km drive east along the South Gippsland Highway offers another introduction
to life on the land through the Warook Cattle Farm where your hosts offer hay
rides and shearing demonstrations.
